August 2009
Dear Zion's Hill Families,
The beginning of the 2009-2010 school year at Zion's Hill is just around the corner! We are looking forward to a fun-filled year, and are anxious to welcome our new and returning families. If you have any questions before the first day of school, please feel free to call me at the school (203-762-9620).
By now you should have received a packet in the mail that included the school handbook. Due to a printing error, there will be a revised version available on the first day of school. Please be sure to pick up a new handbook. We will provide a box in the front hall to recycle the old handbooks. In addition, the state requires that all children have updated health forms -- please be sure to provide the school with your child's updated health form before or on the first day of school.
Looking forward to seeing all of you soon,
Monica Sommer

Tiny Tots
There are still openings in our new Tiny Tots program! This special program was designed with the youngest members of your family in mind. Tiny Tots are not yet eligible for our Two's program (born after January 1, 2008) but they are ready for a parent/child experience in the classroom. One member of our staff will work with the Tiny Tots group each week, on Mondays from 9:30 to 10:30am. Please call the office if you are interested in enrolling your child.
Happenings at Zion's Hill
Be a part of Zion's Hill's success! Here are some opportunities for you to support our school:
Volunteer to be a Room Parent
Room parents needed! This is a great opportunity to help out in your child's classroom while becoming involved in the school community. Specific duties include: acting as a liaison between teachers and families; finding volunteers for classroom parties, special events, field trips, etc.; coordinating teacher gifts; and communicating important school-wide news to families. Being a room parent is also a great way to get to know the other parents in the class. If you would like to be a Room Parent, or if you have questions about this position, please send an email to Cynthia Dempster at dempsterc2004@yahoo.com.
Giving Tree
There will be a giving tree set up in the lobby for the first two weeks of school. This will give your family an opportunity to donate a special item to your child's classroom.
Wrapping Paper Sale
in September The fundraising committee has organized a wrapping paper sale for the first few weeks of school. Get a jump on your holiday shopping needs!
Clean-up day at Zion's Hill Preschool
Thursday,September 3rd at 9:30 on the side lawn
Come one, come all, Children too. Bring your rakes, rags, sponges and buckets. This is a day for Zion's Hill families to spruce up the playgrounds and the walkways around the school. The children can help pull weeds, clean play houses and check if all of toys are in good working order. Parents can rake the summer debris from the surface of the playgrounds and help get the area ready for the new school year. Please call the office to let us know you are willing to help and leave a phone number in case of rain. Thank you.
The Mentoring Program at Zion's Hill
Thank you to everyone who offered to participate in our mentoring program for new families. We know that it will be helpful for our new families to have someone to turn to with the questions that come up when starting a new school. Please join us for the New Family Playdate on September 9th at 12pm on the lower playground.
New Sign-In Procedure
Please note that there is a new sign-in procedure this year. The sign-in clipboard for your child will be located inside the classroom. Please remember to note your arrival time, the person authorized to pick up your child and your initials. Again initial and note departure time at pick-up. A sample sign-in sheet was enclosed in your summer packet. We will provide pick-up notices in the lobby for children who will be picked up by someone other than you, or those listed on your emergency card. For more information about our new procedure, please refer to the ZHPP handbook.
